Transboundary project Vecht

The Vecht is an international river originating in Westphalia and flows into the Zwarte Water in the Netherlands. In order to improve administration and management of the river, the dutch-german Vecht vision was introduced in 2009 which includes a strategy for developing the river basin in the future. The goal is an "attractive and safe river with clean water, healthy flora and fauna, in an economically flourishing region.“

Within the context of this strategy, Deltares and seeconsult, in cooperation with the Dutch and the German local water managers, analyze the socio-ecologic system of the Vecht in the transboundary region. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the practical value of the ecosystem services concept in water management in a transboundary, local/regional setting with the river Vecht as a case study. The study focuses on practical opportunities and the potential for payments for ecosystem services.

The project is commissioned by the Dutch and the German Environment Ministries.
